The practical takeaway: cotton pairs punish you mainly through shrinkage and slow drying, so cold water and a proper flat dry are non-negotiable. Stains by activity: yoga sweat isn’t football mud

Generic advice says “spot treat stains.” Useless, because a sweat ring and a grass stain don’t respond to the same thing. Match the treatment to what actually got on the sock.

  • Sweat and yellowing (yoga, Pilates, barre): The culprit is body oils and salts, not dirt. Pre-soak in cool water with a spoon of white vinegar or an enzyme detergent before washing. Do not reach for bleach — it reacts with sweat proteins and can make yellowing worse, and it wrecks the grip anyway.
  • Grass and mud (football, sports): Let mud dry fully, then brush it off before it goes near water. Wet mud smears and sets. Grass stains respond to a dab of liquid detergent worked into the fabric (fabric only, not the grip) and a short soak.

Once the grip is genuinely peeling, there’s no home fix that re-bonds it — that requires the heat-curing step from manufacturing, which you can’t replicate in a kitchen. Don’t buy a “grip restorer spray” expecting a miracle; at best it adds a temporary tacky film that washes off.
