
Most “factory audit checklist” articles are written by people who have never been audited. They list certifications to ask for and stop there. Having been on the receiving end of these visits, here is what a grip sock factory audit actually catches — and the questions that separate a real manufacturer from a trading company with a nice website.
This applies whether you’re sourcing socks for a trampoline park, a studio chain, or your own brand. The stakes are different at each volume, but the checks are the same.
What you’re actually verifying
An audit answers four questions. Everything on a checklist ladders up to one of them:
- Do they make it, or buy it? Trading companies quote like factories and disappear when there’s a problem on the line.
- Can they hold the spec at volume? A perfect sample proves nothing about pair 4,000.
- Is the grip going to survive? The one failure mode that gets a venue or studio complaints.
- Who is responsible when it goes wrong? Rework, replacement and timing, agreed before you need them.
Verifying they actually manufacture
Ask what they can’t outsource
Anyone can send photos of a knitting floor. Ask questions that only someone running the line can answer quickly:
- How many needles are the machines you’d run this order on, and what does that mean for the rib?
- What’s your changeover time between colorways, and does that affect my minimum?
- Is the grip applied in-house or sent out, and what’s the cure time?
Hesitation on the third question is the most telling. Grip application is the step most often subcontracted, and it’s the step most likely to fail.
Ask for the sample to come from the production line
Not from the sample room. Sample-room pairs are made carefully by hand and routinely outperform bulk. Asking for a line-run pair, even at a small cost, tells you what pair 4,000 will look like.
Testing the thing that actually fails: the grip
This is the part almost every checklist skips, and it’s where the complaints come from.
Wash cycles, not just appearance
Ask what happens to the grip after repeated washing and drying, and then verify it yourself: wash the sample the way your members or visitors will — including a tumble dry, because they will — and check whether the compound thins, hardens, or lifts at the edges. Grip that survives ten cycles in a lab and fails five at home is a real outcome.
Coverage against your actual surface

Ask which compound and why
Silicone and PVC behave differently in wear, wash and cost. A factory that can’t explain why it recommends one for your use case is guessing. The differences are covered in what grip socks are made of.
Certifications: read whose name is on them
The most common sourcing mistake is treating a certificate as a property of the sock. Usually it belongs to the yarn, and the yarn supplier’s name is on the document, not the sock factory’s.
That is not fraud, and certified yarn is a legitimate thing to buy. But if you tell your customers “our socks are certified” based on a yarn certificate, you are making a claim you can’t support. Ask for the document, read the certificate holder, and check the scope and expiry date.
Capacity and timing
Two numbers worth pinning down before you place a first order:
- Daily output on the line that would run your order. Not total factory capacity across all products.
- Sample-to-bulk lead time, stated separately from shipping. Conflating the two is how delivery dates slip.

Agree the failure terms before you need them
The question that gets skipped in every friendly first conversation: what happens if 8% of the run has grip defects?
Get the answer in writing before the deposit. Who inspects, what threshold triggers rework, who pays freight on replacements, and how fast. A supplier who answers this clearly and specifically is telling you they’ve handled it before. One who says “that won’t happen” is telling you something else.
